The Gift of Presence: Supporting Officers Working Christmas

Chaplain Dr. Kevin Lamb, Thomas County Sheriff's Office

"And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." - Matthew 28:20

This Christmas morning, while Thomas County families are opening presents and sharing breakfast, several of our deputies will be answering calls, patrolling neighborhoods, and ensuring everyone else's celebration stays safe and peaceful. Their sacrifice deserves our recognition and support.

The Hidden Cost of Service

Working holidays isn't just about missing Christmas dinner; it's about missing those unrepeatable moments. The excited squeals when children discover what Santa brought. The family traditions passed down through generations. The quiet conversations over coffee while everyone else sleeps in.

Our officers understand this cost when they take the oath, but understanding doesn't make it easier. Every officer working Christmas is choosing your family's safety over their own family time.

The Gift of Being There

But here's what I've learned in my years as a chaplain: sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply being present for others. When Jesus promised to be with us always, He knew the power of presence. Our officers embody that same gift; they show up when called, they're present in crisis, and they stand watch while others rest.

Officer, if you're reading this while on duty on Christmas Day, remember: your presence in our community IS a gift. Every family sleeping safely, every celebration that goes undisturbed, every emergency you respond to—you're giving the gift of peace and protection.

How Thomas County Can Show Support

For Our Community:

  • Visit the Station: Drop off homemade cookies or coffee for officers on duty

  • Social Media Love: Share positive messages about our deputies using #ThankYouTCSO

  • Adopt-a-Shift: Local businesses can sponsor meals for officers working holidays

  • Prayer Coverage: Commit to praying for officer safety during your family celebrations

  • Simple Thanks: Wave when you see a patrol car, say "thank you" when you encounter an officer

For Churches and Organizations:

  • Christmas Care Packages: Assemble comfort items for officer families

  • Meal Trains: Organize dinners for families when officers work long holiday hours

  • Childcare Support: Offer babysitting for officers' families during holiday events

  • Gift Cards: Local restaurants and stores—practical support that families appreciate

Spiritual Encouragement for Those Serving

If you're working this Christmas, remember these truths:

You're Following Christ's Example: Jesus left heaven's comfort to serve others. Your sacrifice reflects His heart of service.

God Sees Your Service"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord" (Colossians 3:23). Your badge work is kingdom work.

You're Not Alone: Christ was born in a stable because there was "no room in the inn." He understands what it's like when circumstances don't match expectations. He's with you in that patrol car.

A Christmas Promise

This Christmas, whether you're celebrating with family or serving our community, remember that the greatest gift already came over 2,000 years ago. Emmanuel—God with us. That promise doesn't have shift schedules or holiday exceptions.

To our officers working Christmas: Thank you. Your service is seen, valued, and appreciated.

To our community: Let's make sure our officers feel the love of Thomas County this holiday season.
